Overview Gay Club Scene In Sofia

Bulgaria joined the European Union back in 2007 meaning their outdated law, banning homosexuality were changed and that sexual orientation discrimination became officially illegal. There are still no laws allowing Gay couples to wed or have civil partnerships which is where Bulgaria is still behind much of the continent. The City’s first Official Gay Pride event back in 2008  was ruined by protestors declaring homophobic slurs and committing violent acts.

The average person on the street is fairly tolerant and you are unlikely to suffer any sort of discriminatory behaviour. The gay scene here is by no means large, but is bigger and more varied than many of their Eastern European neighbours. Exit and ID are two of Sofia’s leading queer haunts and Essense is the city’s only primarily Lesbian club.
